From a Giant Horse to Tie Dye Aprons!

cropped chef hats

This summer girls have designed websites, dissected cow eyes, created bird feeders, steamed potatoes, learned the difference between yeast and baking powder, posted cooking blogs, made FRIENDS, and had FUN! Each day campers bring new life to the Girlstart building and I know I’ll be sad when the summer is over.

The last two weeks of Crazy Concoctions’ included:

  • 12 – 5lb bags of flour
  • 9 – 4lb bags of sugar
  • 6 bags semi sweet chocolate chips
  • 8 dozen eggs
  • 10 quartz of heavy whipping cream
  • 53 AMAZING chefs (campers)

There are a few spaces still available for 3rd & 4th grade future chefs in the August 3rd-7th Crazy Concoctions Summer Camp.

Girlstart camp is the perfect way to end the summer!

Featured article of the week: Gender socialization & Parenting

parentingI read this pretty interesting article this morning after it showed up on my Google Alerts. Lots of really amazing things for parents (and the rest of us) to think about!

What do you think? How significant is that first pink or blue jumpsuit or the type of mobile hung above your newborn’s crib when it comes to prepping your child for a STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) career?

Girlstart is Going Virtual!

Don’t miss Girlstart’s first virtual conference in Second Life on July 22, 2009! The Project IT Girl Showcase in Second Life will take place on the Educators Coop Island at 2pm CST (http://slurl.com/secondlife/Educators%20Coop%201/28/112/24).

Top 5 Reasons I love summertime at Girlstart!

  1. The 100+ degree weather does not deter our summer campers’ LOVE of animals and hope to one day become a veterinarian or marine biologist.
  2. The continuous sound of girls laughing, learning, and making new friends is inspirational.
  3. 97% of participants have experienced an increase in confidence in doing STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) activities.
  4. Dissecting cow eyes and sheep brains are girls’ FAVORITE lessons.
  5. A 1,900lb draft horse, a miniature donkey, a baby goat, a potbelly pig, a kitten, and bunny are regular visitors!

This summer has already been a huge success and we still have 5 more weeks of discovery to come. A few spaces are left for August 3rd-7th Crazy Concoctions Summer Camp. I hope the special girl in your life will get an opportunity to experience the Girlstart fun!
