Girlstart Goes To Washington

In October, Katelyn and I had the privilege of attending the first National Girls Collaborative Project (NGCP) Conference in Washington, DC. The conference provided an opportunity for organizations that provide STEM programs for girls to come together, share ideas and collaborate.

We saw old friends from SciGirls, NGCP, the National Science Foundation, Ingenuity Center, and  Women in Engineering Program at UT Austin. We also met new friends at The After School Corporation, AAUW, Cisco, Michigan Tech, and more!

One of the highlights of our trip was meeting with the White House staff! We sat down with the Council for Women and Girls and talked about the importance of reaching more girls in STEM, women in STEM careers mentoring girls and career preparation for girls. It was wonderful to share our research and results with the White House and have a seat at the national table for future STEM initiatives.

Thank You Girlstart

Dear Girlstart,

My daughter teaching my son what she learned at camp

I thought I’d let you know that my daughter attended the Jr. Medic Camp this summer and it was such a wonderful experience for her.  She came home loving the programming and before camp she showed almost no interest in computers (not even games).  She told me it was because programming is all about math and that is her favorite subject.

I just wanted to share that with you because as the mom of a 5th grade daughter, finding ways to encourage her interest in math is science is a top priority for me.  I am on faculty in the Communication Studies Department at UT and my undergraduate degree is in biochemistry.  I understand how important it is that girls get these reinforcing messages.  I hope she can attend future events as well.

Thank you so much for your wonderful program!
