Ada Lovelace Day

Ada Lovelace Day is an international day of blogging to celebrate the achievements of women in technology and science.

Ada Lovelace

Ada Lovelace was one of the world’s first computer programmers, and one of the first people to see computers as more than just a machine for doing sums. She wrote programs for Charles Babbage’s Analytical Engine, a general-purpose computing machine, despite the fact that it was never built. She also wrote the very first description of a computer and of software.

Register your daughter TODAY for Expanding Your Horizons to give her the opportunity to learn from successful female science and technology professionals!

Hybrid Jobs Are The Future

Girls extracting DNA at EYH 2009

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/21/technology/21nerds.html?_r=1

“Hybrid careers… that combine computing with other fields will increasingly be the new American jobs of the future, labor experts say. In other words, the nation’s economy is going to need more cool nerds. But not enough young people are embracing computing — often because they are leery of being branded nerds.”

“Educators and technologists say two things need to change: the image of computing work, and computer science education in high schools.”

Girlstart shows girls the cool side of computer science! At Expanding Your Horizons Girls Conference 2010 on Saturday, April 17th, 400 girls will interact with women in science, technology, engineering and math careers with fun, hands-on workshops throughout the day.
